monitoring & control

Road-maps (paper, desktop, laptop/tablet, or mobile GPS) alone do not get you where you are going. You need to keep up with where you are on the map.

To paraphrase a statement by the late W. Edwards Deming, that which is monitored and measured performs better than that which is not. If you do not monitor and measure, you cannot know where you are on the road-map. You also cannot execute the P.I.M.A. process.

This is the most fundamental of business processes:
  • Plan

  • Implement

  • Measure

  • Adjust

And this process is continuous. When you prepare to adjust, you begin by planning the adjustment. Course correction needs to be a vibrant activity in your organization. If course correction is not encouraged and rewarded, your people will be reluctant to forecast and reluctant to report less than desired performance.
